about this as an administrative team in
about this as an administrative team in the winter, and we were really focused
the winter, and we were really focused

on the relational rationale for this
on the relational rationale for this right now.
right now.
right now. Give you two sets of numbers. Uh right
Give you two sets of numbers. Uh right
Give you two sets of numbers. Uh right now, if I'm a unified arts teacher at
now, if I'm a unified arts teacher at
now, if I'm a unified arts teacher at the elementary level, I see 500 kids up
the elementary level, I see 500 kids up
the elementary level, I see 500 kids up to 500 kids across a week.
to 500 kids across a week.
to 500 kids across a week. We're looking to change that. We're
We're looking to change that. We're
We're looking to change that. We're looking to get that ratio down to about
looking to get that ratio down to about
looking to get that ratio down to about 100 kids a week that they would see that
100 kids a week that they would see that
100 kids a week that they would see that they can provide feedback on. Um the
they can provide feedback on. Um the
they can provide feedback on. Um the other additional piece for relational
other additional piece for relational
other additional piece for relational things is between the teachers in the
things is between the teachers in the
things is between the teachers in the building. So, if I'm a classroom
building. So, if I'm a classroom
building. So, if I'm a classroom teacher, instead of walking my child
teacher, instead of walking my child
teacher, instead of walking my child down or my students down to a separate
down or my students down to a separate
down or my students down to a separate classroom every every different day, I'm
classroom every every different day, I'm
classroom every every different day, I'm walking them with the same adult every
walking them with the same adult every
walking them with the same adult every day, and I can have those interactions
day, and I can have those interactions
day, and I can have those interactions about what that child or that child or
about what that child or that child or
about what that child or that child or that child may need as they're getting
that child may need as they're getting
that child may need as they're getting into that classroom. So, it's tying the
into that classroom. So, it's tying the
into that classroom. So, it's tying the group of students together tighter. It's
group of students together tighter. It's
group of students together tighter. It's tying the adults that are working with
tying the adults that are working with
tying the adults that are working with those students together tighter. It's a
those students together tighter. It's a

There's There's an instructional
There's There's an instructional rationale to this idea. Not only would
rationale to this idea. Not only would

we be allowing teachers to remove some
we be allowing teachers to remove some of the re-teaching they do, the

re-explaining they do, the re-setting of boundaries and expectations they do with
boundaries and expectations they do with

build some pieces for students in the
build some pieces for students in the unified arts programming that don't have

reinforce performance over time. And it would also allow us to look at
And it would also allow us to look at
And it would also allow us to look at projects that are focused on the
projects that are focused on the
projects that are focused on the competency and not the task. So this
competency and not the task. So this
competency and not the task. So this idea of looking at what is to be learned
idea of looking at what is to be learned
idea of looking at what is to be learned and then how [clears throat] do I get my
and then how [clears throat] do I get my
and then how [clears throat] do I get my kids there? Those are always good

speaking with folks, we also designed some schedules and just did some
some schedules and just did some

discovered a third rationale for this
discovered a third rationale for this that was not intended and it's a fiscal

That's how I am thinking about this as a

and I also wanted to just clarify a point was I think I know um
point was I think I know um
point was I think I know um who said that there was 30 minutes for
who said that there was 30 minutes for
who said that there was 30 minutes for recess, but I think that's lunch and

No? Is that not? Okay. Okay. That's what
No? Is that not? Okay. Okay. That's what I was under the impression of. Um
I was under the impression of. Um
I was under the impression of. Um Okay. So uh and then another thing that
Okay. So uh and then another thing that
Okay. So uh and then another thing that I wanted to say is that there's
I wanted to say is that there's
I wanted to say is that there's when when you're mentioning um
when when you're mentioning um
when when you're mentioning um school is very different. When I was in
school is very different. When I was in
school is very different. When I was in school we were sitting, it was long and
school we were sitting, it was long and
school we were sitting, it was long and tiring, but and I know these kids get
tiring, but and I know these kids get
tiring, but and I know these kids get movement breaks and it's um
movement breaks and it's um
movement breaks and it's um they tell me about it. They tell me that
they tell me about it. They tell me that
they tell me about it. They tell me that they got to wiggle their get their
they got to wiggle their get their
they got to wiggle their get their wiggles out and it's great, but there's
wiggles out and it's great, but there's
wiggles out and it's great, but there's definitely a difference between a gym
definitely a difference between a gym
definitely a difference between a gym class and a movement break throughout
class and a movement break throughout
class and a movement break throughout the day. And I have a son and a daughter
the day. And I have a son and a daughter
the day. And I have a son and a daughter and my daughter could probably do this
and my daughter could probably do this
and my daughter could probably do this with no problem, but my son behaviorally
with no problem, but my son behaviorally
with no problem, but my son behaviorally I really worry about him going weeks
I really worry about him going weeks
I really worry about him going weeks without gym class
without gym class
without gym class um unless there is another way to build
um unless there is another way to build
um unless there is another way to build in some some more dedicated movement,
in some some more dedicated movement,
in some some more dedicated movement, whether that's additional recess or
whether that's additional recess or
whether that's additional recess or something else. I mean, there's plenty
something else. I mean, there's plenty
something else. I mean, there's plenty of creativity that could
of creativity that could
of creativity that could um come up with a solution to this.
um come up with a solution to this.
um come up with a solution to this. Um there's also, you know,
Um there's also, you know,
Um there's also, you know, I don't think and when I was hearing
I don't think and when I was hearing
I don't think and when I was hearing about this, my um
about this, my um
about this, my um my worry was not so much about having
my worry was not so much about having
my worry was not so much about having the consecutive days, it was more about
the consecutive days, it was more about
the consecutive days, it was more about the gaps that will be there. So if, you
the gaps that will be there. So if, you
the gaps that will be there. So if, you know, the the children are in art for
know, the the children are in art for
know, the the children are in art for six days and then they go however long
six days and then they go however long
six days and then they go however long 24 days without art, there's a huge gap
24 days without art, there's a huge gap
24 days without art, there's a huge gap there. And that part is where I was more
there. And that part is where I was more
there. And that part is where I was more focused on rather than the concern about
focused on rather than the concern about
focused on rather than the concern about the consecutive days.
the consecutive days.
the consecutive days. I think if there was enough time they
I think if there was enough time they
I think if there was enough time they could do all of these specials every
could do all of these specials every
could do all of these specials every day, but when they have to when they're
day, but when they have to when they're
day, but when they have to when they're taken away, like those are the fun,
taken away, like those are the fun,
taken away, like those are the fun, right? So, the math and the reading, I
right? So, the math and the reading, I
right? So, the math and the reading, I want them to love those subjects, but
want them to love those subjects, but
want them to love those subjects, but really my kids when they write down
really my kids when they write down
really my kids when they write down their favorite subject, it is never math
their favorite subject, it is never math
their favorite subject, it is never math and [laughter] reading, unfortunately.
and [laughter] reading, unfortunately.
and [laughter] reading, unfortunately. Um
Um
Um but I think those fun free creative um
but I think those fun free creative um
but I think those fun free creative um classes are what really
classes are what really
classes are what really help them be able to focus on their math
help them be able to focus on their math
help them be able to focus on their math and reading and writing every day. And
and reading and writing every day. And
and reading and writing every day. And without that, I think that will be
without that, I think that will be
without that, I think that will be challenging. Um
challenging. Um
challenging. Um one of my kids, I don't want to bash any
one of my kids, I don't want to bash any
one of my kids, I don't want to bash any specials, any of the unified arts,
specials, any of the unified arts,
specials, any of the unified arts, they're all important. One of my kids
they're all important. One of my kids
they're all important. One of my kids hates one of them for no reason. He's a
hates one of them for no reason. He's a
hates one of them for no reason. He's a boy, he just hates not being able to
boy, he just hates not being able to
boy, he just hates not being able to move. And so, and every Friday this
move. And so, and every Friday this
move. And so, and every Friday this year, we had this battle about going to
year, we had this battle about going to
year, we had this battle about going to school because he just didn't want this
school because he just didn't want this
school because he just didn't want this class that he needs to like, anyway. So,
class that he needs to like, anyway. So,
class that he needs to like, anyway. So, um I just fear that that is going to
um I just fear that that is going to
um I just fear that that is going to have 60 days in a row of that class.
have 60 days in a row of that class.
have 60 days in a row of that class. And 24 days with no gym class could
And 24 days with no gym class could
And 24 days with no gym class could really um
really um
really um behaviorally set him back and his poor
behaviorally set him back and his poor
behaviorally set him back and his poor teacher cuz he is just going to have all
teacher cuz he is just going to have all
teacher cuz he is just going to have all this pent up
this pent up
this pent up energy that
energy that
energy that um
um
um I I just think that isn't going to help
I I just think that isn't going to help
I I just think that isn't going to help many students, and it's not going to
many students, and it's not going to
many students, and it's not going to help the teachers if that's the case.
help the teachers if that's the case.
help the teachers if that's the case. Um
I was also thinking about the I I think
I was also thinking about the I I think I'm hearing a lot of benefit uh
I'm hearing a lot of benefit uh
I'm hearing a lot of benefit uh with the teachers having some support.
with the teachers having some support.
with the teachers having some support. I mean, I have to stop talking.

the one downside as far as the teachers or one of the downsides is just that I

or one of the downsides is just that I worry um that the unified arts teachers
worry um that the unified arts teachers
worry um that the unified arts teachers would have to rewrite a a whole
would have to rewrite a a whole
would have to rewrite a a whole plan. Like, I'm assuming that they have
plan. Like, I'm assuming that they have
plan. Like, I'm assuming that they have a plan for the year, and now with a
a plan for the year, and now with a
a plan for the year, and now with a change in how their classes are
change in how their classes are
change in how their classes are scheduled, that is going to take a lot
scheduled, that is going to take a lot
scheduled, that is going to take a lot of extra effort. I do not have a

I think also with those daily
I think also with those daily transitions to their specials, right?
transitions to their specials, right?

Comes along with the transition of not
Comes along with the transition of not having a special then for 24 days. So
having a special then for 24 days. So
having a special then for 24 days. So when you have a child that's looking for
when you have a child that's looking for
when you have a child that's looking for that unified arts as an outlet, you
that unified arts as an outlet, you
that unified arts as an outlet, you know, like specifically we've heard a
know, like specifically we've heard a

lot about gym and movement, right? For
lot about gym and movement, right? For my child, it's the opposite. They don't
my child, it's the opposite. They don't
my child, it's the opposite. They don't care for gym. They love art. How was
care for gym. They love art. How was
care for gym. They love art. How was your day today, bud? It was great. It
your day today, bud? It was great. It
your day today, bud? It was great. It was Wednesday. I had art. Obviously it
was Wednesday. I had art. Obviously it
was Wednesday. I had art. Obviously it was amazing because I got to do this and
was amazing because I got to do this and
was amazing because I got to do this and this and I got to create this way. And
this and I got to create this way. And
this and I got to create this way. And then I'm able to go back to my classroom
then I'm able to go back to my classroom
then I'm able to go back to my classroom and focus better because I have that. In
and focus better because I have that. In
and focus better because I have that. In talking, you know, he heard me talking
talking, you know, he heard me talking
talking, you know, he heard me talking about this the past two weeks and he was
about this the past two weeks and he was
about this the past two weeks and he was devastated. He was in tears. He said,
devastated. He was in tears. He said,
devastated. He was in tears. He said, "What do you mean I can't have art for
"What do you mean I can't have art for
"What do you mean I can't have art for 25" At that point we were talking about,
25" At that point we were talking about,
25" At that point we were talking about, you know, 40 plus days and what would
you know, 40 plus days and what would
you know, 40 plus days and what would then that look like? So we talked about
then that look like? So we talked about
then that look like? So we talked about all those things. I think
all those things. I think
all those things. I think something I didn't really hear about
something I didn't really hear about
something I didn't really hear about tonight other than from you was about
tonight other than from you was about
tonight other than from you was about OT.
OT.
OT. Um I know specifically OT teachers will
Um I know specifically OT teachers will
Um I know specifically OT teachers will pull students into certain UAs like art
pull students into certain UAs like art
pull students into certain UAs like art so that, you know, those students can
so that, you know, those students can
so that, you know, those students can have that extra
have that extra
have that extra assistance that they might need in their

Um so, I think with that and the impact
Um so, I think with that and the impact it would have not only on, you know, my
it would have not only on, you know, my
it would have not only on, you know, my students, my children, right? Those
students, my children, right? Those
students, my children, right? Those other children as well. You talked about
other children as well. You talked about
other children as well. You talked about doing research groups, but it doesn't
doing research groups, but it doesn't
doing research groups, but it doesn't really sound like those research groups
really sound like those research groups
really sound like those research groups are happening. It sounds like this is
are happening. It sounds like this is
are happening. It sounds like this is happening
happening
happening at the start of the school year. At
at the start of the school year. At
at the start of the school year. At least that's how it's being presented to
least that's how it's being presented to
least that's how it's being presented to teachers. And I think, you know, Mark,
teachers. And I think, you know, Mark,
teachers. And I think, you know, Mark, you mentioned how come we don't hear
you mentioned how come we don't hear
you mentioned how come we don't hear about it from other towns? It's because,
about it from other towns? It's because,
about it from other towns? It's because, you know, we at Atkinson, we heard about
you know, we at Atkinson, we heard about
you know, we at Atkinson, we heard about it from the teachers and I don't know.
it from the teachers and I don't know.
it from the teachers and I don't know. It wasn't presented to any which parent
It wasn't presented to any which parent
It wasn't presented to any which parent probably cuz it hasn't happened yet, but
probably cuz it hasn't happened yet, but

discussed it with school school board
discussed it with school school board member who's not here who had said he
member who's not here who had said he
member who's not here who had said he hadn't heard about it. Um so, it doesn't
hadn't heard about it. Um so, it doesn't
hadn't heard about it. Um so, it doesn't really sound like it's a full plan and
really sound like it's a full plan and
really sound like it's a full plan and like all the research has been done
like all the research has been done
like all the research has been done there, but certainly there are some
there, but certainly there are some
there, but certainly there are some positives to it and we can see that they
positives to it and we can see that they
positives to it and we can see that they would then be available for other things
would then be available for other things
would then be available for other things and that would, you know, create more
and that would, you know, create more
and that would, you know, create more support throughout the school. We're
support throughout the school. We're
support throughout the school. We're certainly open to change as anyone
certainly open to change as anyone
certainly open to change as anyone should be to learn and grow and better
should be to learn and grow and better
should be to learn and grow and better themselves. Um but I just feel like

Some questions you talked about starting out potentially traditionally and then

doing a pilot. So with the pilot and or
doing a pilot. So with the pilot and or if it is rolled out, what would be your

staff, students? How are you going to
staff, students? How are you going to assess if it's working or failing so you
assess if it's working or failing so you
assess if it's working or failing so you know when to pull the trigger to either
know when to pull the trigger to either
know when to pull the trigger to either revert or to continue?

revert or to continue? Next question is

has to discipline them. I cannot imagine the discipline issues that may arise
the discipline issues that may arise
the discipline issues that may arise from due to certain teachers, not all

for the holidays. One of the biggest things around the winter holidays time
things around the winter holidays time
things around the winter holidays time or even Mother's Day or even St.

Patrick's Day is that everybody's
Patrick's Day is that everybody's enjoying the holidays especially in art
enjoying the holidays especially in art
enjoying the holidays especially in art class. So how will you ensure that all

of the kids are getting the same
of the kids are getting the same holiday spirit throughout the year in
holiday spirit throughout the year in
holiday spirit throughout the year in the art class? And again, holiday spirit
the art class? And again, holiday spirit
the art class? And again, holiday spirit might not mention might not mean much to
might not mention might not mean much to
might not mention might not mean much to some, but it really does add to this
some, but it really does add to this
some, but it really does add to this culture and the spirit of the school
