Building Committee Meeting 9/15/26
The Building Committee accepted minutes from July 21st. The group discussed a 60x80 foot building footprint to house a police department, a fire department with apparatus bays, and a public meeting space. They aim to avoid sprinkler requirements by using fire-rated walls to separate the garage bays from the offices. A member mentioned a steel building structure cost of $150,000 as a point of reference for pre-engineered framing. The committee agreed to consult Sean regarding code requirements, specifically square footage limits and fire wall specifications, to move forward with a design concept. The next meeting is scheduled for September 29th. Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7XCJtMXhyQ
Okay. >> Until I spoke with her where she was saying, you know, we don't even like I saw the signs in his sent you in. >> I mean, we didn't have our chance >> and then I couldn't find it anymore. >> Yeah. Why don't you get a hold of us? >> Pick them up Tuesday after election got a hold of >> this will be very out of that here. >> Okay. Spent a lion share the last couple of days. >> I can care all due respect. >> I can care less. >> That's all you have to say. >> I have an MRI tomorrow. >> So, okay. >> We're live. >> I was wondering >> because I can't work. We're live, guys. >> Disability. >> Okay, we'll talk later. So, >> okay. Now, I know everyone has received the minutes from July 21st a couple of times over. That was the last meeting we had. >> Yes. >> Um, so does everyone remember the minutes? Did you all have a chance to look at the minutes? >> Reading them right now. >> I I read them two months ago, but I don't recall having any. >> Make a motion accept the minutes on July >> 21st. >> Okay. Any discussion? No. Everyone in favor? >> I. Seconded. All right. Obviously, we have not met in a very long time. Um, we've had an awful lot of obstacles that have come across in this whole process and project. What I'd like to do is just kind of throw it out there of where we're going to go from here. We're working on a police chief, so to build up a police department again. I mean, we're working on it. Um hopefully we will have someone soon. It just I don't know if we're going to need it to the degree that we have been looking at. What I'd like to see still is to get the people out of that modula into here and get something back here. Um, safe for meetings and maybe a space to hold aside, you know, for when we have our police department. And I know that's kind of putting the fire department on total hold for now. Um, but that's my thought. I don't know what anyone else's thoughts are with this. >> I My thought would be I still think we need to focus on our latest plan, which was the drawing that we did the first time that we took. >> Um, >> I don't think that one. No, there was >> seven Oaks passing. I think we need to focus on that which encompasses future police department growth, fire department usage and space for us to um which doesn't have to be a meeting room if we have to downsize that whatever but we can pull the apparatus out for meeting if we have to just like they do in all these other communities. Town of Conway as big as they are. Anybody looked at the front page of the Conway deal sign when they just had the primary, it showed their town clerk tax collector setting up all of the stuff in their highway garage. >> Wow. Yeah. >> And that's the town of Conway. So >> So you're saying uh basically leave the police station like it is? >> Leave that plan that plan that was try to encompass >> with the bay and all that. >> Try to encompass some fire department usage. Correct. >> In this police station >> in this building that goes out back >> that goes out back here. Right. >> Right. So, it's basically we had a footprint that was prepared by Lee. >> That we originally So, we I kind of the way we left it, if memory serves me correct, was we still take that footprint >> and maybe we just change a little bit on the >> a little bit on the interior. Right. >> So, you want to add a fire station, police station, and conference room. >> The conference room is the fire station. Gotcha. Great. So then you pull stuff out and that becomes our town hall town meeting space. >> This was the two annual meetings that we're talking about. This one was okay >> because I'm sticking to my guns that the growth that we are seeing in this community is nuts. the amount of people that sound that signed up on primary day. >> Oh yeah. >> Um the amount of building permits, the mil, you know, just that the houses not staying on the market. Um that cabin across from my grandparents. 5 hours. That sold in five hours cash. >> That was 300,000. >> 300,000 cash. >> Nice. Look, I looked the inside. I saw the big the looked pretty nice. >> Yeah. and the the lot that was clear across from the Davis meeting house >> 136,000. >> Is that what you're asking for that? I was looking >> but the guy was he had a building permit. He actually came I was out there the other day with Rebecca and Stan. He came and he goes can I get my money back? And we're like no. He goes I'm not building now. He goes I don't want that guy for a next door neighborhood. He had full he was he had a he was going to build a three-bedroom house today garage. >> What changed his mind? >> Yeah. He changed his mind. Now lost the sale. >> What changed his mind? the next door neighbor guy's driving him nuts. The guy that sends us emails all the time that he got out of his own pocket to have a sign erected on the side of the road. >> Oh, right. Speed limit optional. >> It's very small letters. I had to stop to read it. >> Oh, no. The growth is tremendous. >> Cheryl Forier's place then. >> Yeah. You're going back at >> going Well, well, yeah. Yeah, >> cuz the like they went he went to school with Lee. >> Yeah. >> No, the growth is really I the new people that were interested was incredible. >> We've already got a plan. >> So rather than >> augment that you've got a footprint you could work with, right? >> So we want to stay with the same square footage. >> You that is up for certainly up for debate amount of square footage. I mean this could either do this is already on archicat so this can go this way it can go this way without a lot of effort. >> So on the police station do we really need a sadly bay >> I don't know what the sally port >> we do. >> Yeah I think so I think I think so. >> So yeah it seems like there >> it was but >> there was a strong conversation to keep that >> and it's not just for like securing the evidence per se. It's also for um maintenance of the car. So like right now, if you guys remember, it's called the car wash bills that we get. That's because they take it down all the city, >> right? >> Scrub a dub something. The hell is it called? It's called something else anyway because they in the winter time they're not washing the in the driveway. So if we make accommodations for both this and the fire department so that we can rinse trucks off apparatus and vehicles off. >> Now there was storage in there too, right? We had storage built in. Was that going to be um above because we had discussed something like in the rafters or a second >> that might have been in the second round of buildings or maybe it was part of that and I just >> don't remember it. I don't. >> So 50 by 60 for the fire department sufficient >> one day one bay door or two bay doors? >> Two >> 14 footers. Yeah. >> So, one fire truck and one ambulance or what are you playing? >> I'd still want to do the double length base. >> So, we can stack the trucks >> 60 ft. You can >> I think that's what we had come up with, I believe. So, >> so you want to come out the backside? >> Well, you turn that building, Leo, too. >> yeah, >> just one. >> You put the police department next to the here. >> Sure, why not? And just I mean, >> yeah, I agree. And we got enough room to come back around the back >> or as we said now we're here >> or that wasn't coded at that point. >> We we never got through that. >> We never got that far >> because this will most likely become our meeting space. >> Correct. >> Well, the fire department for uh voting. >> Yeah. Well, it als we also if the land use boards come in here, >> we need to do this somewhere, >> right? So, we have to sort that out, >> And then the sally port, cuz the original plan was the salt goes like this. The the sun, you know, >> there's still a conference or training room on in the fire burn, right? >> Right. Yep. >> No reason that can't be the communal meeting space. You know, it doesn't need to be just for us or just for people. >> Patrol room, salad court, evidence room. There's not actually. >> I know. I mean, >> but if we take the square footage and like like I said, reconfigure it, >> right? Reconig. >> There's something that's very high pitched right now that's really ringing in my head. Holy smokes. >> I can't wait until you get your ear fixed. >> You got tinitis? >> No, I have that. >> Me, too. So it's ringing all the time. >> I have a sudden acute uh >> So I got I have an >> auditorial nerve loss. >> Yay. >> Completely deaf in my right ear spontaneously. >> Try like a >> They're actually doing that Friday. >> That's okay. >> I tested for Bell's palsy. >> Okay. I mean, usually you get facial paralysis with that, but I've seen it with just ears as well. >> All right. Back in a building. So, if you want to put a fire truck and ambulance in there and we still need a meeting room, you don't want to change the police department. We're going to have to increase the square footage. >> I I don't see why we can't make the police department. >> Let's be realistic because I think that right there says >> to me, I think it's too big. I mean, yeah, we could probably move the wall. >> And it's no shade at any of them. And I tried making this comment before and it didn't go well. But remember that the the officer that's on spends 90% of their shift in their car anyway. You know what I mean? They're not >> shoot. >> Yeah. The police station is not like the fire station where that's where they stay until something happens. >> What was it? 80 ft. >> This was 60 by >> Yeah. 60 by 80. >> 60 by 80. 30 ft was uh for a police station >> long story closet. >> So we can put out stuff in there. >> So we could probably squeeze this down in here. >> Make this like a black like a conference room type >> conference room. Yeah. >> Yeah. So we need to still keep the fire trucks in that door. >> Well, we just have to reconfigure in here. That's all. >> Yeah. Get this out of >> As long as we have some storage cuz that that's a big too. We need storage. >> What was this? >> I don't know. >> That's a bedroom, isn't it? >> Troll room. >> That's why I said that can be >> God. I'm assuming they'll still need the evidence locker. >> Oh, yeah. We don't need a >> what are we're uh >> is it one third of the is a patrol room. you don't need all. >> So, the the thought I have in my head, and I know we've talked about this, and Chris brought up when he talked with Josh Battles, >> and I believe Lisa might have weighed in on it as well, is that if we had a building with one roof line all the way down through, but we don't need a high ceiling on that side of the building. So I mean if we took the area we needed for what we call our meeting space fire days. Yeah. Wherever that long demising wall is that section of building is you know 10 or 12t walls. The other ones are 14 or 16 foot walls >> and you get a little bit of gable. >> Mhm. and and that may help with that division of that space if indeed we get into the u the sprinkler thing if that's a poss still because we never really got a solid answer because all of a sudden we just kind of we all were you know bailed back and when we had the whole heat issue so >> right >> we we never went back and forth to get a firm answer from Sean on that so we'd have to restart that >> but if there's a way to design it >> Mhm. that avoids to be able to avoid that then that's how we should design it >> right I agree >> so would would we need sprinklers in the fire station >> well see I don't know the answer to that you know I don't I you know I think possibly yes but I I can't I can't answer that >> it most likely be yes because it's becoming a multi-system flat out said you could avoid the sprinklers if it was just a garage >> okay >> down the station >> similar that might not I I believe you're correct. >> But because once you get into multi-use, >> i.e. other offices and stuff like that, then it's not just a garage, >> So then you revisit the sprinklers. That's the way I >> Yeah. And >> I agree. >> If there is a way to if if if it's allowed, if there's a square footage thing in there >> that determines that, >> then and if we can put a fire rated wall, block wall. Mhm. >> You know, I did that the old LL Bean building in North Conway, we put >> six or eight layers of sheetrock, >> but it was still a sprinkled building, but it it was it was allowed, >> And don't discount that even if by code we have to do it, there is still the waiver process. And if we're Exactly. If we're doing some other things to mitigate potential risk, I would venture to guess they'd be more likely to say, "Yeah, I mean, you've got wall, you, you know, fire sheetrock, whatever, >> right?" You know, >> so we go from there. >> And that would be the idea of keeping that garage at one elevation. Otherwise, I mean, I remember the Green Granite Motel and we built that. We had to run the block wall up and above so many courses to follow the roof line so that nothing jumped across the roof, you know. So, there's there's some some potential that we do a little exploration, we stay with a 60 by 80 structure, >> right? So if Lee can like to get something to the March meeting presented >> really >> oh for town hall >> just for present not to build I don't >> no not to build no >> 28 I don't anticipate but just to present to >> a concept say yeah >> and you could even have some budget numbers >> if we can get some numbers >> you certainly can get number on the frame >> yes >> you know in the concrete >> and earth work >> so where do we go here >> but what I'd want to know is where our parameters are regarding square footage with we need an answer from Sean. We'd have to have him I want him to weigh in on this, >> And if you know he's going to he could dictate that to us. >> Mhm. >> It comes at a cost but we've already spent a little bit there but not a lot. >> So if we use these prints we're going to downsize some of this. >> Yep. >> That's all going to be reconfigured. >> I mean personally a blank Okay. We got a 60x 80 building. There it is. We want to divide part of this up for garage and part of this up for for >> so 2/3 will be >> fire department one third >> and one third >> right one third >> for less or whatever >> but of the 2/3 how much of that is technically garage space right do you get a sprinkler pass if it's literally this is just the end of the building equipment sits in the fire department >> it's the fire department sitting in there but we also be using it as a select meeting >> got to be honest about it >> yep I know. >> Yeah. Cuz the land use is all in here, >> Yeah. This this will be full. So either way, we China would have to answer, >> right? We'd need that from him. >> So JT, you take the Can we stick with the 50 by 80 or >> 60 by 80? >> 60 by 80. rearrange the police department a little bit. Get rid of the training room. >> Yeah, I mean I I it worked before. So >> yeah, I would just move all those offices to where the patrol room is. >> Lots of different things. It just, you know, there's a path we need to follow sequentially. And I think the first thing is is I'd want to be advised on from Sean. Yeah, >> I trust his judgment, >> He's just got too much history that goes in the right direction. >> So, we did a rust using this and then did a rough sketch. >> Let me see if I can set up a meeting with him when I see him personally. >> Present both ways saying >> I think I have that. If not, I can get one >> here. >> Yeah. Okay. >> Make copies. >> I think I Yeah, all I'd want is that >> the top. Yeah, this one. >> The those two. Is there a section of that building as well? No, it's fine. Well, it's Yeah, the section shows a truss, but I don't think we'd want that right now. >> I think we're more or less footprint. >> Footprint in this. >> Yeah, that footprint even with that on there. I'll see if I can get a meeting on him. >> So, just say the police department is going to be in >> Yeah. Yeah. Or how much what does he see? put it before your people and see what you can do. >> Right. >> And let us know what we'd have to do. >> And I agree with Mike on the demising wall >> for firewall. >> Let's not focus >> and I don't think Sean should focus >> on it being this way. >> What if it was this way? >> So instead of we, you know, when instead of we had two bays or back to back, we had three bays right here. This comes down here. This corner becomes a meeting space, >> And then this becomes a firewall. So there's two firewalls. >> Sections that you close that >> section. Oh, so you have the trucks coming in in the sally port here, too. All three bays. >> Then it puts the building all at the same elevation, >> That's what that would do. >> We'll see what he recommends. >> Yeah. And he's got a clear vision for >> And then cut this down like this for >> Well, like some of this stuff could come over in the corner. >> Yeah. Then >> and then this becomes a conference room, >> And then we blow the hole in the wall right there in the hallway and go into our meeting space. >> Someday. >> Cuz I would want to know that too if there's any way he could revisit attach it. Yeah, I think that was so that was a whole another different conversation >> just because it'd be nice not to go out the door to go out to go and do that. >> Yeah, >> if we could >> or at least covered breezeway kind of deal minimum. >> Well, I think if we could have that conversation later there's things that we could do a lot of sense. >> Let's put in a goal for tunnel. like me and Joe Green. We can reenact the cheerleaders chair. >> Yeah. Yeah. Okay. >> All right. So, you get into contact with Sean. >> I will do that. I will call him >> or send him an email and see if I can have us organ go with and sit down with him, >> right? and say this is, you know, >> be nice if this is what we'd like to do, >> But we don't need I think his whole presentation last time was drawings and everything else. Scale that back. >> We can handle that end. >> Yes, >> it's far far more economical to do that. >> I think you'll find if indeed he needed something from Lee at any point, he would get it right away. >> He's got a pretty good understanding of all that. >> Okay. for a lot less dollars. >> So once you have uh advice back from >> Sean, >> then we can proceed. >> Right. Let's start with that. Let's see what his time frame is. >> Yeah. Uh >> I'll send him a note >> and try to get something going, >> see what his availability is and I'll just meet him at his office. >> Come up with a concept for a design and then we can get some quotes or rough quotes. >> Then we can go from there. >> Yes. we can get a footprint of the building. So the the So talking about buildings, just have an idea. That new building that went up on Route 16, that gosh Angie building uh right across from where Kurt Brooks's garage was just up above the golf course, same side as the golf course, >> Northbound on 16, >> across from the hardware store. >> Across from Yeah. >> Dross the cigar bar. Yeah, that gray building >> where that one is. >> I don't have much business there. >> So, the building alone and it has some additional heavyweight beams because he wanted to be able to add a gantry crane to the steel beams. >> Oh, yeah. >> The structure itself without concrete was 150,000. >> But hopefully >> just the just the building. >> Just the building. Yeah. >> Sitting, you know, >> not petition though, right? >> No. It's wide open and it's just what it the one that we have on Drew Hill Road in Alton looks the same. What's the size of that building? >> It's got to be more than 40. And I was able to pull a my dump truck in, put the hoist all the way up to the overhead door, not hit it. >> Oh, wow. >> Nose in. So, the hoist was going up at the overhead door. Pretty tall. >> But that's no concrete, no earthwork. That's just the building itself. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> A buck and a half. And it's got a little it's got heavier steel in it. So >> we don't need that. But >> no, you don't. But it's that's what that one that's what that is. >> It's not that much difference. But >> so it just kind of gives you an idea on a steel structure like that, >> And and uh like you know Sean even when he was here, he said, you know, anything pre-engineered is going to be better than stick build, >> whether it's a wood frame or a steel frame. >> Right. Agree. >> Okay. Very good. >> All right. >> Food for thought. >> At least we know what direction now, >> We do need to have a serious conversation because this is the third meeting in a row that was interrupted because we carry over. >> Um cuz there's a lot going on. >> It's okay. >> Whole new staff and Yep. >> trying to sort things out. >> Seasons are changing a little crazy. >> Yeah. I think anybody that has a clue knows that. >> Just hopefully people realize that we're not just driving people out. So >> no, it's just people are moving on basically. That's what it is. They're moving on. >> Greenness in the times. >> All right. That being said, I will entertain a motion to adjourn. >> Make a motion to set a meeting for next time. Pro that was my old spearhead behind my setting the next meeting. do that with us. >> Well, there's there's discussion >> being mindful about when the next meeting is going to be. >> So, you think Sean will have an answer in two weeks or something? >> I I won't even dare weigh it in on that. >> I have to start. >> So, why don't you set a meeting for >> be for now? Do you want to go? >> I don't want to keep waiting. Set up meeting for two weeks. If we don't, we can cancel. >> Yeah, we can always cancel. >> So, if I got something, I want to meet. >> So, for the 29th. So, we'll meet again on the 29th. >> Got it. >> 29th. >> All right. Who Who seconded the motion to return? >> I'll second. I made the motion. >> You made the motion. You can't second it. Okay. >> Everyone's in favor. I
